Richard Maddock Headshot

Position Title
Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences

Bio

Richard Maddock completed his BA, MS, and MD degrees at UC Davis followed by psychiatry residency and research fellowship training at Stanford University. Dr. Maddock is a psychiatrist and clinical neuroscientist who has used neuroimaging, cognitive, psychopharmacological, and clinical methods to study the neurobiology of human behavior and mental health for over 30 years. He has special expertise in magnetic resonance spectroscopy for the in vivo study of brain metabolites involved in neurotransmission (glutamate and GABA), energy metabolism (lactate, glutamate, n-acetylaspartate), phospholipid metabolism (choline-containing compounds and inositol), and inflammation and oxidative stress (glutathione, inositol). His research is focused on neurometabolic processes in relationship to normal brain function and psychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia, anxiety and traumatic stress disorders, and neurodevelopmental disorders. Dr. Maddock is clinically trained in psychopharmacology and psychotherapy. He has extensive experience with clinical trials of investigational medications and other treatments for psychiatric disorders, including over 20 clinical trials for patients with anxiety disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, and a study of ketamine effects in healthy volunteers. He has a longstanding meditation practice and has conducted scholarly investigations of the early Buddhist insights into human mental functions and their relationship to modern neuroscience understandings.
